CRUELTY TO CALVES.
AN OVERCROWDED LORRY
FARMER FINED £3. At the Otahuhu Police Court this morning, before Mr. McKean, S.M., an Ardmore farmer, Henry Stokes, was charged with cruelty to a number of calves. Mr. Noble Webster, for the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, stated that he saw a motor lorry containing twenty-one calves at the Westfield saleyards. The vehicle was overcrowded, and several of the calves were down and unable to get up owing to the others trampling on them. A measurement of the lorry showed that the space for each calf was 24in x 22in. All the animals were dirty, showing they had been down, and several were in a half-dazed condition. They liad been carried a distance of 18 miles over rough roads, and were generally in a shocking state. Defendant denied that the calves were overcrowded, attributing the condition of the calves to the fact that the floor of the lorry became wet, and the animals were thus unable to keep on their feet. The Magistrate convicted defendant for overcrowding the calves in the lorry, and fined him £.i, and costs 9/.
