A PUBLIC DUTY.

WAR MEMORIAL APPEAL.

FINAL WEEK'S CAMPAIGN.

RETURNED SOLDIERS' DAY.

The cenotaph at the foot, of Victoria Street West has been erected sufficiently long now for all citizens to realise its purpose. This week Auckland's people are being given a final opportunity to contribute to the fund for the proposed permanent memorial to the valiant men of the city who fought for the great, cause. The fund for the erection of the War Memorial Museum is still a considerable sum short of the amount required (£200,000), and the appeal from the foot of Victoria Street is being quietly made, with a dignity in conformity with the nature of the request. There will be no waving of cash boxes in front of the pedestrian or any exhibition of the usual moneyraising schemes. There should be, and can he, no necessity to stimulate the populace to open its purse strings—it is a matter of conscience. While the smallest amount will be gratefully acknowledged during the collection at the office behind the cenotaph, and at the house-to-house campaign throughout the city, it is apparent that there are many moneyed people who have not yet felt the force of the appeal. Many have given magnanimously, but there must be many more who can afford to do bo. The Returned Soldiers' Association and the sisters had charge of the cenotaph to-day, and at the time of going to press the contributions collected by them amounted to £55" 4/5. They are as follows: —
