WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB. <■ 1 „ SPRING MEETING OPENS. j c RAZZLE DAZZLE WINS GUINEAS. A WIN FOR RATIONAL. < (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WANGANUI, Thursday. t Though the morning was showery the I weather cleared and the first day's racing j of the Wanganul Jockey Club's spring i meeting was got through In fine weather. ;i The going was dead at the start, but i improved as the day wore on. The racing! was good. Razzle Dazzle won the Guineas I in splendid style, and looks likely to bold J her own with the best three-year-olds in the land. Tukla kept her going for six . furlongs, but was tnen done with. Cold ■_ Ste-cl placed the Spring Handicap to his J credit very easily taking the lead very I early. The sou of Martian paid a big a price. Lochson won the hurdles like a I good one; Listowel also ran well, but was i unlucky. Rational put up a big perforin-1 ance in winning the Flying Handicap with 9.13 on bis back. He was in front three furlongs from home, and stayed there. A WIN FOR THE FAVOURITE. j Proceedings opened with the Putiki Hack Handicap, lor which eight acceptors went to the post, Doleful Ditty being sent i out a warm favourite, with Stream and Equitable very evenly backed. Next in ; demand was Avola. The latter made the early running, but going down the back i Valencia took charge and showed the way < round the bend. As they turned for home? Good Murk was alongside Valencia, and . Veloclform and Doleful Ditty were close , up. They were all In line at the distance, : where Doleful Ditty and Velociforui drew l out, and after a splendid set-to victory ' went to the favourite by at narrow margin. Valencia was a good third, then came , Stream and Good Mark. Dominant was always in the rear, and finished last. .' Equitable was also well buck. ' LED ALL THE WAY. | < All the acceptors went to the post in ' i the Maiden Handicap, Glaive carrying ' more money than Soliform. Of the others ■ Mountain Crag and Lulu Sylvia were the , most fancied. Glaive was quickest into his stride, but after going a furlong Soli- ■ form took charge and led all the way. Cushat made an effort at the bend, and \ ran up second, hut Soliform carried too many guns, aud won very comfortably. The ■ winner is a three-year-old gelding by Seilferino—Adour, trained by J. Jamieson. : Cushat looked well, aud should win before long. I EIGHT OVER TIIE STICKS. j Tinokaha was the only scratching in the ' Okebu Hurdles, leaving a Held of eight j to saddle up. Malingerer was sent out a < good favourite, hut Lochson and Listowel were also well backed, Otauru Kid being most fancied of the others. It was a good race. Listowel led over the first fence, : when Killnrd went to the front and showed the way to the six furtongs post. Here Listowel put in a fast run on the rails, and took charge, but struck the hurdle nt the five furlong post, dropping back fourth, and Lochson went on in front, j Listowel made a big effort over the last three furlongs, but lind to he content with second place, just Denting Eerie. The winner won nicely, hut Listowel would have troubled him had he not lost so much ground nt the* back. The favourite was fourth. JUMPERS ON TIIE FLAT. | There were nine starters in the' Jumpers' Flat Ilandieap, Naughty and Malingerer declining their engagements. Complex was the popular pick, with Tinokaha next in demand, Paraon being most fancied of the others. Nukumai, on the rails, began well, and led over the lirst two furlongs from Empyrean and Koyal (lift. At the six furlong post Empyrean went to the head of the others from Nukumai and Dempsey. hut a little later on Royal Gift ran up second to Empyrean. At the head the order of the leaders was Empyrean, Tinokulia, Dempsey and Complex. The lirst lo turn for home wns Tinokaha, with Empyrean and Guld Star close up. Half way down the straight Complex and Gold Star were in front, hut Dempsey Joined issue and the three fought out a' great tinisS, passing the post iv line. Dempsey, from the Press stand, appeared to get his nose in front with the last stride. However, Ihe judges verdict went to Gold Star by the barest margin, with Complex a nose away, third, aud Tinokaha i a neck further back, and I'arnoa fifth. CLASSIC WINNER PICKED. Black Ronald and Soliform were taken out of the Guineas, leaving a half-dozen to line up. Razzle Dazzle was made a warm favourite, though Tukla was also well hacked. of the olbers Reremoana. Dubious and Attractive were all fairly well supported. An even start saw Tukia and Ru/./.le Dazzle quickly draw out , from the others, and the two were Hiring < together in front for six furlongs, being followed by Reremoana..Dubious aud Pantagruel. with Attractive last. A quarter ut a mile from home Tukia began to lire. Razzle Dazzle drawing away, and. leading Into the straight from Reremoana. which had shaken off Dubious mid Pantagriiel, i and headed Tukla. At this stage Attractive was putting in a good run. lf'ereI monna made a big effort in the straight, hut Razzle Dazzle went on to win very 1 comfortably by a length and a half, with I Attractive some three lengths further back, and Tukia fourlh. Dubious fell in the i straight, hut fortunately neither horse nor I rider was injured. Razzle Dazzle's performance was a good one. and the Killironey llllv will prolmblv win other classic | events. Tukia lound the distance too far I for her, and tire-d to nothing over the last quarter of a mile, finishing some three lengths behind the placed horses. THE HACKS. Thirteen went lo the post in the Durle Hack Handicap, which was a good betting race. Black Cruiser found most support, I while Cochineal. Dodo. Civility, and Sunny I Vale were also solidly backed in that order. They were let go well in line. Megan being the lirst to show out, followed by Ora's Delight and Civility. The latter ran to Ihe front going out of the hack si retch, with (Ira's Delight. Megan, and Cochineal ! following closely in that order. As they swept into the straight, Civility and Ora's Delight were together in front, but they were joined nt the distance by Sunny Vale. Then Black Cruiser, which had had n had run. came on the scene, and a good finish ended in a win by half a length for SunnyVale from Black Cruiser. Civility being three-quarters of a length further back. Then came Cochineal and Halgina. A FIELD OF EIGHTEEN. The big field of eighteen started in fhe Spring Handicap, Lady Kotiripo being tlie only defection. Zircon* was favourite from the opening of the machine. Arch Salute carrying n little more money than Admiral Codrington, with Demas and Rouen evenly supported. Thespian was first to find his teel from Arch Salute, Guest and Cold Steel. The latter led out j of the straight from Guest, and round past j the six-furlong post, where they were followed by Tenterfield. Arch Salute, Thespian, Zircon, and Trespass. Going down the back Crucelle ran up fourlh. Cold Steel still showing the way to Tenterfield and Crucelle. The latter improved her pos- j tion going round the bend, and was runniug second to Cold Steel as they turned into the straight, followed by Snateher. Tenterfield and Zircon. In the run to the post Cold Steel easily held his own, and won comfortably by two lengths from Crucelle. with Zircon a close third. Then came Rouen. Tenterfield and Thespian. It was a very ' close thing for second place between Zircon. Crucelle nnd Rouen, many thinking Zircon beat the other two. The last to pass the ; post were Patiiki and Demand. The winner paid a great price. j RATIONAL BEATS VEIL. i The only defection from the Flying n.in- ' dicap was Ilipo. Of the thirteen starters Veil was entrusted with most money, wiilr national and King Quin also well backed. The favourite began well, and led over the first furlong but seemed to get a bump and dropped back, Inah taking charge. Rational ; was in front crossing the top from Veil, ■ Inah and Ecuador. Rational was lirst to turn for home, and went on to win by a clear length from Veil, with Ecuador a : neck away, Zouave being fourth. Later results are:— ! The issue hung iv the balance for a moment, and then Tranquil forged ahead. Donoghue acknowledged defeat by casiiig Papyrus before he reached the post. It was a satisfactory race as a true test, though Papyrus had nrie of his hind legs cut below the hock, showing that he must have been struck. The "Daily Telegraph" does not. however, for n moment suggest that this affected the result. The "Daily Chronicle" states that Tapyrus was cut about and bled freely from two wounds.—(A. and N.Z.
