VEIN OF COPPER.
BETTING WITH BABIES. LONDON, July 25. The betting tax committee now investigating bookmaking in England, was astonished to learn that school children made penny bets. i One child, who was not afraid, offered to place a bet for her. Some of her boy pupils made bets only on big races. Others made bets on three or four days a week, and one boy daily. The average age of the boys was 11 years.« Three boys usually combined to buy a threepenny tip, and resold to their classmates at *d each. They lodged their bets at a email shop, at which a bookmaker called. the members of the committee sceptically inquired where the shop was, and the teacher said that she was willing to answer anonymously, but feared that she would arouse the "parents' anger. She believed that some parents encouraged their children to bet.
