LATE MR. G. W. MURRAY.

SERVICE TO EDUCATION. GOOD FRIEND TO TEACHERS. "The teachers have lost a good friend," stated 'Mr. E. C". Banks, chairman of the Auckland Education Board, to-day in paying a tribute to the late Mr. G. W. Murray, who died this week after having been connected with education in the district for 45 years. "He was a kindly, genial man. who was absolutely upright, and was always a loyal member of the board."' added Mr. Banks. After reading an acknowledgment by the Director of Education to Mr. Murray's unselfish devotion to education, Mr. Banks stated that Mr. Murray was headmaster at Kaukapakapa School for 28 years, from 1577, and subsequently was a teacher at tlie Normal School. In ]!)I0 he became a member of tire Education Board, on which he served continuously from then, being the board's representative on the Grammar School Hoard, the Flam School of Art, the Seddon Memorial Technical College, and the University College Council. Mr. J. D. McKenzie stated that Mr. Murray did the greatest service to teachers throughout New Zealand, for he was tbe man who had originated the teachers' superannuation fund. After tributes by Messrs. Brownlee and I'urdy to the kindly personality of -Mr. -Murray, tbe board passed a resolute,., ~f ra„v„l and oi" condolence with Mrs. Murray.
