HOUSING.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—Your correspondent, G. Neville Carlsen. in denouncing terrace houses as something derogatory to working men can surely know very little of housing outside of New Zealand. Practically the whole of the West End of London, where the aristocracy reside, is built in terraces, and rents of £1000 and £2000 a year are commonly paid for terrace houses in London squares. The terrace system in Sydney, two-storey brick buildings, with little balconies and clean asphalt or concrete back yards, provides ideal homes not only for working men, but for anyone who wants comfort and cleanliness. The sooner this system of housing is adopted i**% Auckland the better for the health and comfort of the people. The chief obstacle is the high price of bricks. That is a matter that demands the attention of tlie Government.—l am, etc. COMMON SENSE. (To the Editor.*, Sir.—ln reply to "Without a House." I wish to state that my sole object in protesting against "terraces" was to draw public attention to the fact that it is only a halfway measure. It is, as I quoted before, an " anything is good enough for the workers" way of meetin* the situation. "Without a House" asks: " Where are those quarter-acre sections within easy reach of the city?" From the summit of Mount Eden he may view ' them. He further asks how the working man can afford to pay the prices for quarter-acre sections, which by the way is somewhat inconsistent, when we consider his suggesting that they did notj exist. T wrote apropos of a Govern- j ment housing scheme, not an individual matter. The housing problem, I main- - tain, should be solved by a responsible j government providing neat little houses in quarter-acre sections in nice surroundings, not "terraces," which neces- j sitate folk living a la rabbit. So sin-1 cere am I in my protest against the j "terrace system" of housing that I am prepared to meet in public debate any j supporter of the halfway Tory measure.—I am, etc. G. NEVILLE CARLSEN. j
