Professor Gauss, of Freiburg, dis- I covered a new general anaesthetic called j narcylene, which consists of purified : acetylene and oxygen gases, the smell i of the former being masked by the addition of oil of pine. An assistant pluckily submitted to experimentation, I and became insensible to pain in less ' than five minutes.
