TENNIS IN SYDNEY.
' ANDERSON BEATS OLUVXER. LOSER WINS EIGHT GABIES. SYDNEY, March 25. In the final of the City of Sydney ' Tennis Championship, J. 0. Anderson (X.S.W.) beat G. P. Ollivier (X.Z.), 6—2, 6—2, 6—4. Ollivier gave the best display to date, ' but he had the misfortune to find Anderson at the top of hie form. The latter's ' excellent placing also soon put him ahead of Ollivier. In the first set, Ollivier won one excellent rally by smart work off the mark, but on several other occasions he remained rooted to his position when out of reach of returns that could have been played. Anderson imparted more pace to his service and returns than usual, and displayed marked partiality for good length cross court drives which left Ollivier little alternative but to stand and admire 'hem. Ollivier encountered trouble with the line umpire's decision for footfaulting though the spectators disagreed with the decision, as did Anderson, apparently, since the latter immediately double faulted in a glaring manner, presumably to nullify the advantage gained by the doubtful decision. The central umpire later ruled a service by Ollivier in, when it was obviously over the line. The New Zealandcr thereupon double faulted to the accompaniment of hearty applause of the spectators. Play throughout the three sets varied little, except in the third, when Ollivier I brightened up considerably and took three ! games to one. Anderson then knuckled j down to serious play, winning five games to his opponent's one. In the doubles final, Anderson and /•each beat Sieler and Baker, 6—2, 6—3, 6—4.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
