PRISONER COMMITS SUICIDE.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON", Sunday. An elderly man, whose name is believed to be Madden, who had been acting strangely, was handed over to the police. He committed suicide in the padded cell at the central station.

The man appeared quiet, but all articles considered dangerous were removed from the cell, which was visited by the police at intervals. When a constable visited the cell about one o'clock he found Madden lying on the floor. The body was warm but life was extinct. Madden had suffocated himself by rolling a portion of his coat and thrusting it down his throat.
