The operation was in chargs of M, John Watson, now superintendent of the Taupiri Mines, Ltd., but until recently manager of Blackball mine En was assisted by Mr. J. A. C. B aTB (Chief Inspector of Mines) and Mr.'w M. Parsonage, the manager of State mine. Operations were begun at 3 a.m. and by 6 a.m. the first party M penetrated to the seat of the lire Bi mid-day temporary stoppings had' beta erected close up to the fire on the intak, side, and by midnight similar stopping, had been put in on the return B ide" By this method the fire area was got com pleteiy under control, and was confined to part of the mine that doei not interfere with future mining opera, tions of the company. To provide pei. manent security temporary fire stoppU, are now being strengthened. The will be able to resume work probably ]n two or three weeks.
