MR. MACMILLAN'S CAMPAIGN
SPEECH AT TE PUKE. TE PUKE, Saturday. Mr. C. F. Macmillan addressed a wellattended meeting at Te Puke on Friday evening. Dealing with his candidature he explained that when Sir William Herries was indisposed, he recognised that bis recovery would be a matter of time, and asked the Prime Minister to be relieved of his office. Upon being asked whom hi- considered would be best to represent the Tauranga constituency in the Reform interests, the late Sir William Herries suggested the speaker. Discussing finance, lie said that New Zealand's tnxntion per head was £12 11/3 at June last, against the £19 0/9 quoted by Sir Joseph Ward. Sir Joseph Ward would probably say that the lipure £19 0/9 was absolutely correct, and the £12 11/3 did not include stamp duty, whicli amounts to £7(30,000, and which made up the difference. This was Sir Joseph Ward's explanation of the difference. The whole of the population in New Zealand is over 1,000,000, and he could not see how £700,000 divided by one million is going to give anything like £7 odd. According tv his calculation it comes out at about 15/, and then 15/ on to £12 11/3 did not amount to £19 0/9, as stated 'by Sir Joseph Ward. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried by acclamation, with some dissent.
