POISONED SWEETS.

POSTED TO POLICT OFFICER. LONDON, February 28. Walter Tatum, who was awaiting trial on a charge of having attempted to poison fir Wm. Ilorwood. Commissioner of the Metn pelitan Police, by sending him poisoned chocolates through the post, has been found to be insane. Some time ago Sir Wm. ITorwood and his confidential secretary suffered indisposition after tasting chocolates which had come through the post, and an analysis showed tnat the sweets contained traces of poison. Suspicion fell on Tatum, on account of his erratic behaviour, and he

was arrested and charged with the crime. He pleaded not guilty and re-se-ved his defence, being committed for trial. Tatum has now been sentenced to be detained during the King"s pleasure.— (A. and N.Z. Cabh ,
