OPEXIXG AT CHRISTOHUROH. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.* CHRISTOHTRCH, Tuesday. The chess congress opened to-day with 14 entrants for the championships, including Dunlop, the holder. The principal absentees were Barnes and Davis. The delegates were ■welcomed by the Hon. H. F. Wigram, president of the association, and a preliminary meeting was held to settle the details of the play, which opened thie afternoon. The first round resulted: Phil beat Friberjr, Dunlop beat Buehan, Coombs beat McCrea, Severne beat Roberts, Stevens 'beat Anderson, and Kelling drew with Hioks.
