THE SEAMEN'S DISPUTE.
(To tlie Kditor.) Sir, —Ts it. possible that no mo\e is heing made to bring about a settlement of the seamen's dispute, which is at present causing so much inconvenience and bringing distress to many families who are dependent tipon breadwinners now out of employment from their vessels? It is a remarkable thing that the masses have been kept in the dark as to the reasons for the dispute, and no one seems to be moving in the matter so far as arranging a settlement is concerned, burely the time has arrived when the parties should he called together and all the cards placed upon the table. Should there be reasonable grounds for the present attitude of the seamen then the sooner their objections are attended to the better it will be for ail concerned. It does not appear to be at all credible ■that these men would leave their positions if everything was in order, and added to this would he the knowledge that their wives and families would have to suffer were they to remain out of employment, and particularly so at this time of the year. What has become of the Chamber of Commerce that it has aiot looked into the question for it is undoubtedly a matter which should have received -the attention of that organisation in the interests of the commercial community alone.—l am, etc..
