TRADESPEOPLE FEEL THE PINCH.
(By Telegraph-Presa Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The strike is affecting the tradespeople of Lyttelton seriously. as the idle seamen, until last week, were receiving no financial support from their union. It i* understood that destitute unionists are now being paid their board, after they have been idle for one month, or the cost of tobacco and food in cases where the men are "baching" or camping. It is estimated that there are between 300 and 400 seamen idle at Lyttelton. in addition to a fairly large number who are living nt Christchurch. They seem to take the strike in a rather unconcerned manner, being confident that in the end they will benefit and go back to work under the conditions of the old i award, with the new rates of pay under j the recent award. : Naturally some of the married men are j feeling the pinch, and are anxious to see the trouble ended.

The released Moeraki seamen will be stranded in Sydney unless the union comes to their assistance.— lA. and N.Z.)
