AIXEGED THEFT OF MONET. THE KAWHIA (ASK. iRy Telegraph —Special to "Star"). HAMILTON. Tuesday. The attention uf the Supreme Court was engaged this afternoon in the hearing of two of the nine charges against Henry Thomas Smith, late constable and clerk of the Court at Kawkia, of having stolen various sums ot^ money, the property of the (Jovernment, when in execution oi his oflicial duties, and of having purloined two lamps from the Kawhia wharf and a wheelbarrow from a carpenter of the township. The two charges on which accused is at present arraigned concern the disappearance of two separate -sums of fa and il 13/6 from tbe Court funds, and on both charges Smith, who pleaded not guilt v. is represented by Mr. Northcroft'. Mr. H. T. (Allies. Crown Prosecutor, said that in June. 1921. a man nMMt Cuff paid the accused £.) as an instalment on a judgment summons take! out by Wannan and Sons in 191* Smith paid the money into his own •► count. When the transaction was questioned. -Smith wrote to Cuff asking bin to say that be had given the accused <-.vo cheque*, and that one was dishonoured. The evidence would SHOW that the only -.-be-,uc paid was not dishonoured. With respect to the SMOnd charge. Tanerau Tanatu paid *< '*™ in respect to a summons to Smith. »&« paid it into hi- own account and g*« no receipt.
