WHITEHAVEN DISASTER

■ "'• ■■■■■ ALL HOPE ABANDONED. GAS FOILS RESCUERS. PIT MAT HAVE TO BE SEALED. (By Cable.—Press Association.—CopyrlghU (Received 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, September C. All hope of saving any of the 40 men entombed in the Whitehaven colliery pit in Cumberland has been abandoned. Poisonous gases and heavy falls of rock foiled the rescuers. Twenty-five bodies have been recovered, but it is feared that the pit may have to be sealed, preventing the recovery of the remainder. Grief-stricken wives and mothers of the entombed men arc awaiting news at the pit-head. The victims include a father and his two sons, also a mining student named Fell, son of the vicar of Whitehaven, who had descended the pit for the first time.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
