(Ry Telegraph—Press Association.! NELSON. Wednesday. The Australian hockey team opened the'.r New Zealand tour against Nelson this afternoon, at the Botanical Reserve, in ideal weather. There was a large attendance. After a strenuous game the match ended in a draw. 4 goals each. It was the tirst gntrc in which the visitors had played together. I and they gave a good exhibition, showing' clean and clever stick work. Some good j individual players are among them, espednllv Abel, who played a great game at cent-e- j half. The ground was In good condition, but ' it could clearly be seen that the Anstrallirs were used to playing on a smooth surface. Wlt'i one of two more gafties they should develop Into a fine (•omWnntlon. It took son c time for the teams to settle down to the'r | game. The score at half-time was 2 goals j all. Play was very wllliug in the second ] spell, and some fine passing movements were shown by both sides. PROSPECTS OF THB TOUR. The first intercolonial match in the annals of New Zealand hockey, which took place at Nelson, gave the impression that the Australians may prove a far tougher proposition than was at firstf indicated. In drawing with Nelson, wTio are exceptioually etrong this season, the visitors put up an excellent tight, when it is taken Into consideration that It was the first game after a rough trip across the ocean, and that they were operating on a strange ground. The Nelson ground cannot be said to he of thej billiard-la-hlo order, and there is every promise of the visitors winning their full share of the games in the Dominion, providing that the interpretation of the rules and the strenuous tour will not materially affect their play and deplete their resources. The match with Auckland takes place at the Remuern hockey ground ou September 23. Messrs. T. H. Hodson and !__. 'H. Norton have been appointed referees.
