JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS.
PROPOSAL FROM NORTHCOTE. A scheme for the extension to the Xorthcoto district of the junior high school system recently put into operation at the Kowhai School by the Minister of Education, has been evolved by Mr. W. J. Wernham, headmaster of the Northcote District School, which embraces a main central school at Xorthcote, with manual school adjacent, and side schools at Xorthcote and Birkenhead. Mr. Wernham last night outlined hi; suggestions to the School Committee which unanimously passed a resolution expressing its heartiest approval, and deputed Mrs. A. TaVlor, Messrs. .1. P. McPhail, 11. S. Gribben. and W. C. Smith to take action to further the proposal, after conferring with Mr. Wernham. The probable attendance nt the High School was estimated as follows: At the initiation about 180, rising next year to 300, and, allowing for natural growth nf population, to 350 as the permanent roll number. By reckoning the two side schools as one unit, a crade VII. school would be obtained, with corresponding status and staffing. The chairman pointed out that under the scheme Birkenhead could still be made a separate school and district. The idea was to give every child which attended school some secondary education. Three-fifths of the time would be devoted to ordinary education, and the cither two-fifths to ascertainine tho callina the scholar was mo9t fitted for. Xot half the children attending primary schools got any secondary education. The primary schools at Birkenhead and Northcote would take up to the fourth standard, and the junior high school in tho central position, standards V. to VII.
