COUNTRY ROADS UPKEEP.

QUESTION OF A TOLL GATE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.} THAMES, this day. Recently the Hon. J. G. Coates gaw tho Thames County permission to erect a toll gate on the Coast Road, provided Coromandel County agreed, but Coro mandcl strongly disagreed. The mattei came before the Thames County Council yesterday, whvn the chairman (Mr. II Lowe) said the council was willing to exempt Coromandel vehicles from toll charges. The site of the proposed gate was 36 miles from Coromandel, and the toll gate would affect that county very little. The gate was dtsired to enforce contributions from tourist traffic towards the upkeep of the road. Councillore pointed out that one condition of the toll pate was that all receipts be spent on road maintenance, and as Coromandel people would benefit if they used the road it was decided to place the matter fully before the Coromandel Council.
