HARSH OPERATION.

TI.S. IMMIGRATION LAW. NEW YORK, August Iβ. The latest victims of the working of the restriction of immigration law are Australians. Mr. David Cooper, his wife, and a two-year-old daughter arrived from Britain more than a month ago. The authorities were willing to permit Mr. Cooper and his daughter to land because they were born in Britain, and the British quota was not exhausted, I but Mrs. Cooper, because she was born ■ in Australia, was unable to land. An I appeal to Washington was ineffective,: and after waiting a month Mrs. Cooper returned to Europe, to come back to the United States in the next steamer in the hope that the Australian quota then will not be filled.—(A. and X.Z. Cable.) SIX RELEASED. (Received 10.:i0 a.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, August 10. Six Australians, detained since July 31 because the quota had been filled, have been released on parole indefinitely, subject to deportation, which is not probable.—(A. and X.Z. Cable.)
