UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEMS.
CO-OPERATION OF THE CHURCH j AITEAL TO THE SYSOD. s £By Telegraph—Press Association.) i WELLINGTON, Friday. ■ I The unemployment problem was "dis--1 cussed by the Wellington Diocesan Synod to-day. The Bey. T. Feilden Taylor'said - he knew of many instances in which mar--3 ried men with wives and little ones had l been out. of work for at least five - months. He thought it would only be i necessary to make an appeal to church. - people to secure their, co-operation in the = relief of distress. He suggested, firstly, that they might support the fund opened I■. by the Mayor of Wellington; secondly 3 i that the church members should make' offers of half-day's or day*; employment in cleaning windows, cutting lawns, tidying gardens, etc.; thirdly, he sugsested n that urgent cases of distress should be * reported to the relieving authorities". * , There were at least 700 men out of work s ■ in Wellington, and he believed the posis tion was much the same in Palmerston ;" j North. He moved a motion on the lines n indicated, and said he wished the resolu,- , tion to apply to the whole diocese and 1 not merely to the city. If only half the *- people offered work some small measure of relief would be afforded. I After discussion Mr. Taylor agreed to c an addition to his motion to the effect " that the Government and local bodies bS . urged to set up further relief work. c ' The motion was eventually carried in £ the following form: ''That" this synod J views with deep sympathy the present r I distress caused to many by unemploy- .. I ment, and rejoices to see the effort : c which are being made by the Governj ment and public bodies, and hopes that n more may be done in this direction. It v also urges Church members to co-operate j as far as possible in all efforts to relieve n such distress." j Mr. Taylor stated that he understood If ! the Mayor was prepared' to open imme,o ' diate relief works if the public would d pay for them. "1 want to see Church 1.1 members get rid of a little more of tho ie ! morning tea 'stunt' and hand in their d money." He also suggested that Church a members should be appealed to to inie J crease their vicars' private poor fund. n I It was decided to forward copies of 'c ' the resolution to the Prime Minister and j Mayor. ~
