ATHLETICS.
The cabled announcement tlfat W. K. Applegarth has broken tup British record f"r 100 yanfe by covering the distance in 0 8-5 seconds, represents one lof the most surprising eorop backs in athletic ]iis, tory. Just before the war the dapper little English sprinter was ■champjon of Britain with several records to his credit, his best for the hundred being 9 4-5 seconds. While on active service Applegarth contracted malaria, 'and when he took up running at the termination of hostilities he was far below his old form. He was beaten on one occasion by Lindsay, tho N.Z.E.F. sprinter. Little more was heard of him until the other day when he put up his record this week, 1-5 of a second faster than his pre-war best.
