COMMONWEALTH SHIPS
ULTIMATUM EXPIRES. EATING ITP THE FLEET. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) SYDNEY, July 2. The ultimatum which was issued stating that unless the Seamen's Union manned the Largs Bay unconditionally by noon on Saturday, all Commonwealth vessels would be laid up on arrival, has resulted in a deadlock. Up to the time of the expiry of the ultimatum, not a single seaman had presented himself for engagement on the Largs Bay. Under the terms of the ultimatum, therefore, practically all the Commonwealth Government ships will be paid off as they arrive. The position is causing great anxiety in shipping cin|es, and the next move is anxiously awaited. — (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
