FURY IN GERMANY.
WORKERS AND WAR.
ATTACKS ON REACTIONARIES. BERLIN, July 2. Herr Helfferich, one of the leaders of the National party, has fled from Berlin to an unknown destination. Excitement prevails in the provincial towns. Furious mobs are invading the houses of Monarchists and throwing pictures and busts of the ex-Kaiser into the streets. Ernest Techow, one of those arrested for the murder of Dr. Rathenau, admitted that he was aware of the plot to assassinate Dr. Rathenau and drove the car from which the shots were fired. President Ebert issued a decree stating that members of secret societies planning to murder prominent people are liable to the death penalty or to penal servitude for life. Anybody knowing of the existence of such societies is liable to penal servitude if he does not inform the authorities or does not warn anyone threatened thereby.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) MARK AT LOWEST LEVEL. LONDON, July 2. Exchange on Berlin to-day reached 1750 marks to the pound sterling—a new record.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.))
A GENERAL ORGANISATION. MELBOURNE, July 2. The All-Australia Trade Union Congress .has concluded. It elected a Council of Action representative of the various States, which will function as the virtual controlling body of the Australian industrial movement. The congress adopted a resolution condemning possible wars in the future, as opposed to Labour's interests, and urgently calling upon workers to organise immediately to prevent war by linking up in order to oppose the designs, methods, and machinations of capitalistic Governments. As a first step the Council of Action was instructed to call a Pan-Pacific conference of workers' organisations in Australia next year, simultaneous with the Pan-Pacific Science Congress. It was also resolved to hold a demonstration against war during the week of the anniversary of the beginning of the Great War.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
