THE GENERAL ELECTION.
NOMINATING CANDIDATES. MAYOR Dr.OLTNKS REFORM PARTY'S ' REQUEST. Candidates for the next Parliamentary (lections continue to be announced intermittently, though as yet there has not been a great deal of activity in the Auckland Province. It is known, bowever, that all the sitting members with the exception of Mr. K. Mander (Marsden) will again contest their seats. There are eight electorates in the Auckland City and suburbs, of which the Government bold live and Labour three. The Labour party has already announced its candidates for the eight seats, but as yet neither tbe Government nor Liberal parties have made their nominations.
The Mayor of Auckland, Mr. .1. 11. Gunson, was asked last night to represent the Reform party in the Auckland West contest. The request was made at the Leys institute, but Mr. Gunson definitely refused tv accept nomination. Before the requisition was presented it was announced by Mr. T. B. Arthur that Mr. Gunson had given the speaker to understand that he would not accept nomination fur any seat, and Mr. Gunson later made this quite clear. Regret was expressed by Mr. M. J. Bennett that a man uf the ability and experience uf the Mayor would not enter the political arena as men of bis calibre were urgently needed at the present time.
The persent member for Auckland West is Mr. M. .1. Savage, Labour, who defeated Mr. C. I. Bennett (G) and Mr. A. .1. Kntrican (L) the voting on that occasion being. Savage .'1750. Bennett 1270, Kntrican 1414. Mr. Gunson unsuccessfully contested the Roskill electorate.
