FOOTBALL.
PRIMARY SCHOOL NOTES. Last Saturday saw school football in fallowing. Over forty teams took the Held, and in the majority of cases keen contest.) resulted. There is naturally a difficulty in providing refereee under such a demand, but with teachers and members of the Referees' Association the situation lias been adequately met. Juvenile players, however,' would do well to remember that whereas gome refereee take a very lenient interpretation of the off-side rule, others carry it out strictly, and co when in contact with these latter players are liable to get their side into serious difficulty. '.
Tlie chief general defects of play so far observed are this very frequent and often unchecked off-side game, and a tendency on the part of a youth jvith the ball hesitating while running in the hope that be can thus dodge a prospective tackier. Meanwhile, to his surprise, but not to that of othere, he is collared by someone else following up fast.
There was a. solid "gr." between the neighbours Kdendale and Maungawhau, the former securing a deserved victory by 11 to 0. The game between Edendalc and Remuera should be worth watching.
Two other neighbours, Mount Eden and Mount Albert, hud a keen struggle at Eden Park. It was a case of a back game against a forward one, and the dash of the Mount. Albert pack more than balanced the pace and e.lusiveness of the Mount Eden backs. Dohcrty's try was a fine effort.
Newton Fast. Remuera. and Richmouil P,oad all hud runaway victories in the-A grade.
The best of the fj contests was that between Avondale and Epsom. It was a hard fight, marked by solid forward play, keen tackling, and particularly fipo kicking on the part of both rearguards. The pointless nature of the game was.a. fair indication of the merits of the teams on the day's play.
There, wore some line games in the junior section. That between Maungawhau and Mount Kden in particular was one which displayed on the part of tho small fry" a remarkably good knowledge of football tactics. Both teams kept well on side tackled determinedly, Ami kicked well. Sauvcrin's try was a reward of keen following up, and though it came as a surprise it showed what individual effort can <10.
As it is possible to see but few of the games played each Saturday teachers and referees will greatly assist these notes by any comments they may put on tlie result cards.
