HOCKEY.
The Auckland Hockey Association will probably send a team south towards the end of August. Arrangements are already in hand, and it is proposed that the team will go as far sout'. as Nelson. The suggested date for the North and South Island match, to be played at Nelson, is July 20.
"Wellington have challenged for the Shield, nnd fbo match is likely to eventuate on September 2. It is tl.e only date that the Basin Reserve is available.
The only team to come to Auckland in quest of the Shield is Waikato.
Three sub-assoc'ations. Rodney, (holders of the White Horse Cupl, Whangarei, and Franklin, have challenged for the Norden Cup, but the governing "body has ruled that only one challenge from sub-associations can be accepted, therefore Rodney will most likely represent tho Auckland country districts.
In order to induce players to make the trip to Nelson for the North and South Island Match the New Zea'and Hockey Association has informed the various local bodies that the team to represent New Zealand against New South Wales will be selected from the form displayed in that match. However, at the present time there seems little prospects of a team from New South Wales putting in an appearance.
l>ast year the Auckland Referees' Association sent to Christchurch for a ruling on the roll-in when there was a doubt about which team ghou'd have the ball. The local body suggested that the defenders should get the benefit, but the Now Zealand executive decided otherwise. However, Auckland brought the matter up again, and. after stating that tbe secretary acted without their instructions, headquarters decided just what Auckland suggested eight months ago.
