GOVERNMENT CO-OPERATIVE CONTRACTS.
(To tli*: Kdltor., j Sir, —T again write to you to furnish . further facts with regard to t.hi- evil* with which worker? on the Public Department working on the co-operative j contract agreement and on relief works, havn to contend with at present. A j party of five men worked on pier foundation hr.lps at a britlffo near Athenme in May. The price for this work ia 3/4 per ; cubic yard, baeed on the 10/ per day ] given to relief workers. Further along the line men are engaged on precisely the came claee of work at a price ba^ed on 14/ per day, showing unfair discrimination. The particular holes which j the party of five men worked on' measured: C. 18 x 12 S ;>, 40 cubic yards: | D.. 18 x 9 x o. 30 cubic yards; E.. 21 x !> .x 5. 35 cubic yard*: F., 21 x 0 x 5, 35 cubic yards; a total of 140 cubic yards. On our payment voucher for May, which we received on .Tune 13, and which is in my poaeeesion as evidence, we were paid for 67 cubic yards, which means that for 73 cubic yards we got no payment. Of course we muet be entitled to a remeasurement of this work or lose wages amounting to ' £12 3/4. By publishing these facts in the interests of the public and the 6000 relief workers at present in New Zealand, something may be done to free the people of New Zealand from an unfair system.—l am, etc., I E. J. PEDEN. j
