BOXING.

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. THE FIXALS TO-XIGHT. The annual provincial championships of , the Northern Amateur Boxing Association were opened last night at the Town Hall, when the attendance indicated a keen interest iv the sport, while the performances In the preliminary rounds were exceptionally good all round. Representatives from Whangarei. Te Aroha, Hamilton, and the King Country competed with city aspirants for the honours, and in their performances showed the result of careful training, and in some instances good tuition that gives evidence that the improvement in the amateur standard of boxing shown last year Is being maintained. Io the fly. bantam, feather and light classes the boxing was distinctly good throughout. Purtly, the Australasian bantam champion of last year, is in the featherweight class this year, and he met ■ a very clever boxer In Collins, whose defence fully taxed the other lad's resource In aggression to get a win In a bout that was lively, Collins loslug his chance by waiting too much on defeuce. Iv M. Hatton, last year's New Zealand champion, and C. Trowern, a hard-hitting newaspirant. Purdy should be fully tried in tbe finals. Postlewaight, who was bealen by Halford in the flyweignt. and Mills, wbo lost to Brlckman lv the bantams, are two very promising boxers, who were unfortunate in the draw. (.'. Vernall aud Halford, In tbe flyweights, and Green. Brown, aud Brlckman In the feather class, will provide some lively bouts in the finals: i while tn the light class C. Blackburn unit G. Reeves, a hard-hitting youngster, are expected to make hard play In the finals. F.
