SCHOONER TIARE TAPORO.
LEAK ABOVE WATERUNE. ''■ NOW UNDER BRITISH REGISTER. As a result of the survey of the. schooner Tiare Taporo. which returned to Auckland on Tuesday with water in her hold, it has been found that the leak is above the water line and is due to the partial opening of a butt. Only, eleven bags of rice were damaged and it is attributed to good stowage that more damage was not done, wood being stowed around the outside between the rice and the flanking of the hull and also on the bottom of the hold. This kept thp cargo away from the -water, and steady attention at the pump prevented the water from gaining to any extent. The damage can be repaired again in about a day, but there are at number of other matters to be attended to the schooner is ship-shape again; such as the bending of another stay-sail, the other one having blown out; renewing the water supply, the present supply being "ealty," and re« stowing the cargo. It is expected that the schooner will sail on Monday or Tuesday next, and it is not likely that she will be 6een again at Auckland for some years at least. When leaving Auckland last time eh* was under a French flag. Before clearing Papeete for Auckland on her first return since then the Tiare Taporo was under temporary registry papers issued by the British Consul in Tahiti, these holding good until her arrival at a British port. Having completed her survey at Auckland she is permanently under the British registry, her permanent registration papers replacing the provisional papers iesued to her by the Britsih Consul afe Tahiti.
But the reason that the Tiare T"apoxci is not likely to return *o Auckland for a, long time is that, since her absence from the islands, the work on the new slipway at Papeete has so far proceeded as to make it possible 60on to repair small vessels there. For some time there have been no proper facilities for repairing ships at Tahiti, but lately work was begun on this new slipway, which is t» replace the old one, and it will be possible to oairy out repairs to all vessels under 200 tons on the new etructure. As the Tiare Taporo is only 137 tons the slipway will easily accommodate her. Her -work among the islands as a trading vessel requires her frequent return to Rarotonga. and from there to Papeete is only a few days sailing.
