AM AUCKLAKDER'S FLIGHT. PROBATION OX THEFT CHARGE. "This man, in company with another, both wearing overcoats, went to the shop of Mr. Campbell, a jeweller, in Tory Street," eaid Sub-inspector McXamara, wiien John O'Brien entered the dock of the Magistrate's Court, Wellington, on Monday. O'Brien was charged with the theft of two table knives and a marble clock, J valued at £2 5/, from James Campbell, on April 20, and of a satin dress, valued at 10/, from some person unknown. Accused denied the offences. '"They entered the shop of Mr. Camp- ' be 11 ,,, went on the sub-inspector, "and these things were put out on the counter for them to inspect. Shortly after they departed the articles were missed by the owner. Evidence will be called that the accused went to another man, and asked him if he knew where there was a "fence, , ' and that later the clock was found at the bottom of this man' 3 yard." "I bought them off a joker in a coffee-stall," wan O'Brien's explanation. As to the second charge, said the subi aspect or, accused had called upon a second-hand dealer to sell a couple of , blouses and the silk dress. She had not I wanted to deal with him; but he had' returned a second time. j Accused, who came from Auckland, had ' fallen in with a bad lot, said Mr. Mc- j N'amarn ; "he's down and out and has no i ; money." | "I've a good mind to give him a | chance," said his Worship, and ordered j the man to refund the costs of the prosecution, and put him on probation for ; six months.
