LATE HON. GEO. JONES.
MEMORIAL IN OAIMARU. (By Telegraph.— Press Association.) OAMARC, Sunday. A largely-attended meeting of representative citizens convened by the Mayor was held last night, when it was decided to erect a memorial in recognition of the invaluable civic and national services rendered by the late Hon. fieo. Jones, M.L.C., and late proprietor of the "Oamaru Mail."' The meeting was fully representative of all shades ot opinion. Dr. Douglas, who submitted the proposal to the meeting:, acknowledged the courageous services in the cause o' political and social reforms rendered by the deceased, whose sincere and fearless advocacy of his beliefs had aroused the admiration of friend and opponent alike.
The Hon. IC. 11. Clark I Palmerston South) heartily endorsed the proposal, saying; many of the political and personal friends of the late Mr. Jones in all parts of New Zealand would be desirous of joining the citizens of Oamaru in recognising the lifelong work of the iti-aswl.
The Mayor, Mr. .1. McDiarmid. announced that there was no occasion to make a public canvass, as leading residents iiad already provided the hulk of the money required, but it others d«sired to subscribe, only nominal subscriptions would he accepted.
The memorial will lake the form of a hoantifully-desijrnpd stone arch, suitably inscribed, on the municipal sections in the main thoroughfare now in the hancJ3 of the Oumarti Beautifying Society.
