LOSS OF H42.
ROSE AGAINST ORDERS. LONDON, April 27. It is officially announced that submarine H42 was sunk on March 23 owing to coming to the surface contrary to orders during a dummy attack. The commander's reason for doing so was not known.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) H42 was sunk in a collision with the destroyer Versatile during manoeuvres off Gibraltar, there being no survivors. The submarine was rising to the surface when the Versatile, home\xird bound and taking no part in the manoeuvres, travelling at 20 knots, crashed into her. The submarine came to the eurface within 30yds or 40yds of the destroyer, so that, the collision was inevitable. The., destroyer cut right through, the tiny vessel close to the conning tower. The water rushed into the submarine, and she instantly sank in half a mile of water. All aboard her must have been drowned within two or three minutes without a chance of escaping.
