WATER SUPPLY.

THE CITY SERVICE. INQUIRIES BY. HEALTH OFFICER. A letter was received by the City Council last evening from Dr. T. J. Hughes. Medical Officer of Health, regarding the water supply. Dr. Hughes wished to know whether the council had sufficient water to meet the annual requirements of the city and suburbs at present supplied from Waitakere. .and Nihotupu; what was the position regarding the.Candy.de chlor filter which he understood was to be ordered by the council, and whether, if applied for, the council could supply Mt. Albert and any other suburbs " continuously? The waterworks engineer stated that the council had sufficient water to meet requirements. A chlorination plant only was ordered, it being the opinion of the Candy experts that the 11 miles of 21-inch main from the Western Springs to the Ponsonby and Arch Hill reservoirs would dechlorinate the water equally as well as a filter, and that analysis had proved this to be so. In any case the Western Springs water was not now being used. Mount Albert was now being supplied and other suburbs could be arranged for if necessary providing nothing unforeseen occurred to delay the work ou the Nihotupu dam. It was decided to forward a reply in accordance with the waterworks engineer's statement. The Parks Committee reported that the Mount Eden Borough Council was protesting against the undue amount of silt' and vegetable matter in the water supplied by the City Council. The waterworks engineer slated that in his opinion this was due entirely to local conditions. The latest analysis of the water taken from the reservoir that supplied Mount Eden, showed, after the sample had been-allowed to stand for eight days, that there was no deposit of any description. The council decided to reply in these terms..
