THE SOCIETY'S ACTIVITIES. AXXTAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children and the Prevention of Cruelty to i Animals was held yesterday afternoon. The I Rev. G. Bond presided in the absence of i the president. Dr. Beattie. The report. whicb was received and adopted, stated that the work of the Women and Children's Department has been ably carried on by Miss I. L. Burton, unaided. for some years past. Mrs. Fry has recentlr been appointed an assistant organiser, ana has already proved her fitness for tie confidential and often extremely difficult wort that falls to her share. Most of die cases that arise in this department are settled by tactful and judicious arrangement, while some are arranged by the kindly intervention of the society's advisory solicitor. The court is not appealed to except where necessity compels. During the last twelve months 220 cases were dealt with, as compared with 149 cases for the previous year. 34 cases were taken to court, and of this number orders were granted in 16 instancesThere were three cases of disobedience to old orders, while the remaining 15 cases were withdrawn by consent or struck out through non-appearance of parties. The" Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Department has been ably served by the inspector, Mr. N. Webster, whose usefulness, stated the report, grows daily as ni* I experience widens, and who combines devotion to duty with tact, tirmness and ?ooa sense.
