A carter named Charles Tucker, residing at Cobden Street, received painful injuries this morning through the behaviour of a fractious horse. He was engaged in loading timber at LeylandO'Brien's, in Customs Street, at about 11 o'clock, when the horee reared up. Tucker endeavoured to get out of the animal's way, but fell backwards, just as the horse moved off, one of the wheels passing over hie right arm. He was removed to the Hospital, where on examination it was found that he had sustained a compound fracture. Theft of cash amounting to £21 and of a ehirt and razor from fellow boarders in a house in Upper Queen Street wae charged against Francis Cardwieis Townsend, a man about 55 years of age, who spoke with a slight American twang. The most unfortunate of the boarders wae G. L. When Thurgood had been two days at the house he found that a shirt had been taken from his suit-caee and £15 from his pocketbook. He made no complaint, but the third night took the precaution of lockI ing his bedroom door, Townsend then being in bed and asleep. He was awakened by Townsend leaving tne room about 6.30 a.m., and later he found that £6 had been looted from his troueere pockets. He informed the police, and Detective Knight found the mueing ehirt in a brief bag that accused carried with him. A razor that had been missed by another boarder wa« also found in the brief bag. Evidence was given by other boarders that accused, known as "Captain.'" had flashed a number of notes on an occasion just after the £15 had been stolen, Accused pleaded not guilty, and wae committed to the Supreme' Court for trial, ball beinj fixed at £200.
