"THE FIRST BLOT."
"The first blot on an otherwise honourable career," was the plea made iby Mr. Osburne-LMy on behalf of Walter L. D. Chapman (65), who admitted in the Supreme Court yesterday charges of theft of money and falsifying books when employed by the Harbour Board ac wharfinger at Devonport. Accused had had an honourable career as a master mariner for the White Star and other shipping lines before coming to Auckland in 1909 under engagement to the Harbour Board. His Honor stated that he gave -weight to accused* previous good career. It aeemed to him that over-indulgence in liquor had had something to do with this lapse. Accused would be admitted to probation for three years, with conditions that he refund the money taken, pay i costs, and take out a prohibition order against himself, and adhere to t.he terms of the order.
