ENGINEERING LOCKOUT

A BIG EXTENSION.

FURTHER 600,000 OUT. CONTROL OF WORKSHOP PRACTICE. (By Cable.—Pr esg Association.—Copyright.)

LONDON, April 23.

Negotiations between the Engineering Employers'. Federation and the 47 unions outside the Amalgamated Engineers' Cnion have been broken oil. The employers hove ordered an extension of the lock-out affecting 600,000 men.

Correspondence published shows that the employers demanded tbe right to be the sole judges of what changes in managerial control of workshop practice should be effected without consulting the unions.

The representatives of the unions in tbe negotiations expressed the opinion that no union could accept such a stipulation as a condition precedent to negotiations. They declare that the employers apparently decided to extend tbe lockout to bring the unions to heel.

The Minister of Labour, Dr. T. J. Mac Namnra, is conferring with the parties.

Owing to the stoppage of work at the shipyards shipowners are sending refitting and repair work abroad. The Cunard liner I.aconia has gone to Rotterdam from Uic Tvne for finishing.— (A. and NZ. Cable.)
