A FIVE-ROOMED HOUSE.

WHAT IT CAX BE BUILT FOX. A committee set up by the Central Progress League in Wellington to consider tlie housing problem has prepared a report describing a five-roomed concrete house which, in the committee's opinion, can be built for £000 singly and for less in groups, according to the site and locality." "The house,"' reports the committee, "Iβ a solid, well-built, compact, and convenient house, with essential conveniences but minus all unnecessary expenditure. The rooms are of the following dimensions: Two front bedrooms, approximately 14ft x 10ft; back bedroom, lift x 10ft Gin; living room, lGft 6in x lift; bathroom. Bft 2in x sft 3in; kitchenscullery, lift x Bft 2in inside. Double windows are provided for two front rooms and living room, in which there is ait. open fireplace. A linen press is provided. There are a scullery bench, a sink, a pot cupboard, a boiler and tub. A gas stove is provided for in the kitchen. The bathroom contains bath, basin, and lavatory. Electric light and drainage are provided. "The committee obtained an offer to construct these houses at the price named, provided a sufficient number of houses are guaranteed to warrant the necessary plant being put in. The houses would be constructed by a new method, and everything would "be standardised, which naturally would tend to cheapness. The committee are convinced that with actual experience in construction these house will be built for considerably Ipm than the price named, even with no alteration in the price of the raw material. It will therefore be seen that a suitable working man's house can be ■built for much less than is being paid for old houses to-day. The report will he considered by the league at its next meeting.
