CRICKET.

INTER-VARSTTY MATCHVICTORIA COLLEGE "v. AUCKLAND. The annual cricket match between Victoria College and Auckland University College was commenced at Eden Park this morning. Heavy rain during t,he preceding day and night made the wicket very sodden, and a shower about 10 o'clock did not improve matters. However, the sun shone out brilliantly a little later, and at 11.25 Auckland, who won the toss, opened their first innings on a very heavy wicket. Dunning and Goodwin were the initial batsmen, the former taking strike to < _usins, who opened from the western end. He glided the second ball of the over for a single, and Goodwin drove the same bowler for a like amount. Dunning hooked Cousins for a brace, and Goodwin sent him to the on for a like number. : Altogether the over yielded 7. Ander- • son took up the attack at the other end, '• and runs continued to come freely, Duni ning getting the new bowler away to leg • for two _'s, while each batsman scored i j singles. Dunning brought Cousins round t ' to square-leg for two, and then put him i I through the slips for a single. The out- , | field was very dead, and the ball would . ; not travel, so that the full value of the i ! strokes could not be obtained. Goodwin I i then drove Anderson to the on for three, i ! and a little later the same batsman, in f • attempting a hook to square-leg. was r ; caught by Miles. 25— I—l 3.1 —13. Play had 1 been in progress about a quarter of an . hour. Saunders filled the vacancy, and { l_>wis replaced Cousins. The new bats- ,. man opened his account with a single, j and then Goodwin hit Lewis to leg for a brace. The next delivery he lifted over „ the boundary for six, and almost immeI diately Saunders 6ent the ball across the

I leg boundary. Good« Tin was nearly , • yorked from the second ball of Ander- j | son's next over, and two balls later Gib- j I son took him smartly behind the wickets. I 40 —_ — 22. Goodwin had given a good I display in compiling his total. Speight | ! was the newcomer, and Saunders found j Lewis, a slow break bowler, rather diffi-, cult to play, a maiden over resulting. Speight opened his account with a brace to long-on oft Anderson, and scored a j single from a like stroke. Next ball Anderson scattered Saunders' stumps. 43—3 —5. W. R. Garrard, the skipper of the Auckland team, followed, and Speight with a single past mid-on j allowed the newcomer to face Lewis. He obtained a like amount with an off-drive, j and then Speight hooked Lewis for two. I Runs were coming slowly, the fielding of j the visitors being very keen. In Anderson's next over Speight put one up to | Mile* at square-leg, and he just failed to get it. GarraTd brought up the halfccntury with a swing to square-leg off Lewis, the match having then been in progress half-an-hoiir. The next ball he put past mid-off for four, while ho hit the third ball bf Anderson's over for a trio, and GO appeared. j A little later Speight was clean bowled by Anderson, who had the fine average of four wickets for 21 runs. 63— i —9. Smeeton filled the breach, and commenced with a couple off Anderson's sixth delivery. It was a Very lucky 1 stroke, for the ball caught the shoulder of the bat and'went just over the top of . the wicket and past the wicket-keeper. The ra_s mounted steadily to 74, when Smeeton failed to make up his mind , about a bumpy one from Lewis, and it ! , found his wicket. The teams had been • playing about three-quarters of an hour ; wihen a -heavy shower interrupted play I for about 'five minutes. Weir then I partnered Garrard and Anderson ap- • peared to be bowling off the wicket. ;, Eventually both batsmen got him for singles, and 80 appeared on the boa_d for about 50 minutes' play. Garrard then sent Lewis over the on boundary, and at 90 Wiren replaced Anderson. His second ball was hooked to leg for three, \and Garrard, with a similar stroke 4 scored a brace. Altogether the over

1 yielded 8. The century was reached in 1 Lewis' next over, after an hour and ten * minutes' play, which was very quick 1 scoring considering the wretched wicket. 1 Next ball Weir was given out leg be'ilore to Lewis. 100—6—14. Macklow I then went to the crease, ami Garrard ! lifted one from Wiren high past mid-on, | but there was no one there and the batsmen ran two. He was lucky in playing . I tihe next ball, but the succeeding two--1 deliveries he banged past mid-off for 4. . i The following ball went to leg for a j trio, while Macklow got a single. It was a rather costly over—l 4. At US i CousinS look the ball from Wiren, and ['■ off his fifth ball Garrard sent a "stinger" |to McKay at mid-on. who-just failed to hold it. The following delivery he j drove to the on boundary, while Mackllow put him to leg for 3. Garrard, , I who was then 50, had been at the wickets for an hour. When the luncheon adjournment intervened tbe score was HUi for six wickets, Garrard being 61 not out.
