WHY BUTTER IS RISING.

SUPPLIES NOT YET NORMAL.

Explaining some of Hit reasons for t the upward tendency of the butter t iiiarkcL i.i U-.ui.uwi, Ui. ueakee (JJia'Ctui - ( of Agriculture) told a "Times" reporter £ they were probably: — (1) Increased _, consumption, 1.2) shipments to the Con- ,j tinent, (3) Continental production not t yet back to norma!, (4) limitation of t shipping space from Australia and -New c Zealand. c "It is stated (added Dr. Reakes) that f Australia is shipping apples in the space 6 which might carry butter; and, were , New Zeamud not shipping so niu-.h meat i more space would be available for but- ( tor, though each is understood to be get- t ting its fair share of apace. As compared i with 1913, the following nations are t supplying to the United Kingdom quan- i titijs of butter which are very much less t than the quantities they supplied in i pre-war days:—Ru.-.sia, Sweden, J 'en- 1 mark, Netherlands and France. The imports of Irish butter into England , are not indicated in mc returns which j we have received. This is doubtless , owing to the fact that Ireland has i hitherto been a portion of the United t Kingdom, and the quantities of butter j received from Ireiand into England ( have not therefore been regarded as < imports. During 1921 the United King- , dom's imports fTom the following conn- < tries v.ere as under: —Denmark 1/250,176 , cwt, Argentine 401,354, New Zealand j 709,351, Australia 9i8,00a."
