PRICE OF BUTTER.
WHOLESALE AND RETAIL. INCREASES LIKELY. The possibility of the tvholcsale and retail prices of butter being increased in this city as the result, of the increase in price on tbe London market was the subject of inquiry by a "Star" reporter this morning. Mr. 11. C. Aickin stated that under existing conditions it was difficult to make a definite statement. There AA-as cA - cry possibility, hoAyeycr, iie added of the prices being advanced on Monday. The manager of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Co.. Mr. Cuthherfson, declined to make I a statement in connection with the matter. THE LONDON MARKET. PRICES STRONGLY ADVANCING LONDON, March 23. Butter has shown extraordinary strength this Week. With supplies temporarily short importers h»A-e been able to raise the price daily till choicest New Zealand was quoted at 175/ to 180/. and Australian at 160/ to 165/. Not much actual business Avas done at these prices, but there was considerable speeulatiA-c business. It is expected that retailers will raise the price of Ncav Zealand butter to 1/8 to 1/10 next AA-eek. Some fear that this may check consumption, but the public has acquired the butter habit again and probably the advance will not have a great effect. Cheese remains firm, though coloured is more plentiful and is coming back to nearly the level of white. Best New Zealaftd Avhite is quoted at 02/ to 94/. and coloured at 04/. Australian Avhite is quoted at 88/ and coloured at 90/ — (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
