EXTERMINATION OF THE RAT.
UNIVERSAL EFFORTS DEEDED. Efforts for the destruction of rate should not be intermittent or local, but systematic, continuous, and universal. Spasmodic efforts for the destruction of rats should be avoided as being worse than useless. it is notorious that if a persistent localised attack is made on rats they will leave the locality only to return "hen the hue und cry has* died down. it i» of little use. for instance, scaring rats out of a town if they are to be driven into the country, or vice versa. This simply would have the effect of spreading any disease of which rato might b« the carriers.—N.Z. Health Department.
