HIGH SARARIES.
SHOULD INCREMENTS STOP? (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. A suggestion was made 'by Mr. Geo. Witty to-day that in connection with the retrenchment scheme the Government might suspend for twelve months or longer any automatic increments of £50 per annum. Mr. Massey replied that this sugges- . tion was under Cabinet's consideration in connection with the preparation of the Supplementary Estimates, but no decision had been arrived at. While he , was anxious to 6ave money, he did not wish to do any injustice to any State employee. Mr. J. McCombs: It is a monstrous proposal, which will affect some lowpaid teachers. •Mr. Witty: I meant nothing under _500. Mr. Massey explained that the bill gave the Government power to revise teachers' salaries within the limits of 1 the money provided. He could not sayexactly what would be done until the - bill was passed and he had a chance to return to the usual 'business.
