ARMS REGISTER.
BUI—T BOOK OF R_T_B_-*C_. CITY'S IX»I_STIC ARMOURY. According to tbe arms register Auckland City could turn out at a moment's notice an army of 10,800 citizens equipped with rifle, gun, and ammunition, while the district contains firearms numbering just on 18,000. As a matter of fact, the Arms Register promises to be about the bulkiest book of reference in the police archives. The confiscation and registration of automatic pistols has reduced the number of these weapons to a minimum, and the domestic armoury which is on' the index consists almost entirely of shotguns and rifles of _- calibre. The work of compiling the register has been very much more arduous than had been anticipated, and it has taken the Arms Office staff a full twelve months to get the names on the register in alphabetical order and indexed. So far the register has not been classified, tout the work is in hand, and during the year it will be possible by mean's of the register to locate practically every weapon legally held in the city, and to nominate the class ol weapon in possession of every permitholder. Meantime the register continues to increase daily, by continuous records of the gifts, sale and exchange of firearms, so that the present register of seven large volumes will .probaibly run to a dozen volumes ere long.
