SYDNEY'S BLACK CHRISTMAS.

UNEMPLOYMENT AND POVERTY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) , SYDNEY, December 17. Christmas bells will ring with a false note in Sydney next week, for instead of being the season of good luck and increased business, hundreds upon hundreds of men are being dismissed. Even the shops, where the Christmas harvest is reaped, are putting their assistants off to save paying them for the days on which the shops will be closed. Engineering, shipbuilding and iron trades are suffering a terrible slump and men are being "put off" every day. Several hundred workmen were discharged from Cockatoo Island alone this week • On inquiry at the N.Z. Government office it was learned that very few-New Zealanders have reported as being destitute, and Mr. Blow, the Government agent, says that he docs not think there will be any call for assistance for New Zealanders here. Sydney is at' present realising the full meaning of the word slump, and Christmas will not be the time of rejoicing as it is traditionally.
