LOOKING AHEAD.

NORTH SHORE WHARVES. When the pioneers of Devonport chose its name, they no doubt had a vision °f the older Devonport with miles of docks and shipping, and a dense mass of concrete and the smoke of Industry. It seems that the Borough Council has caught an echo of that idea, for at their meeting last evening they passed a resolution asking the Harbour Board to ccc ahead in the matter, and remember tt»t North Shore here would some day be like North Shore in Sydney. The •Mayor, Mr. King, pointed out that now Devonport is formally declared to be a natal base, and in view of the fact that commerce is growing in the borough along with the increase of population, it was well for the town builders to remember that it would not be very long before the borough would have its own steamers bringing cargo direct to the wore instead of transhipping it at Auckland. Mr. King enlarged on the Business of the near future when £120,000 worth of road work was to be done for we borough. In addition to this, TakaPuna had road work in view, and there ™*s talk of a central electric power ™ard. Such developments would mean 'Oat thousands of pounds' wortli of material would be shipped to Devonport from overseas and coastal ports, and it *ould be a sane economy if transhipP'&g could be avoided. The discussion was introduced by a letter from Mr. Bond, who WTote'for Permission to land timber at the Sheerlegs wharf. This oermission was reWeed by the Harbour Board on the of the. Commander of <Jie Chatham, who was averse to cargo "oats berthing at the same wharf as w ar vessels. The motion urging the Harbour Board jo make provision in their plans for ™« great development on the "Northern Shore was carried unanimously by the council.
