WON BY THiDEN. JOHNSON OUTCLASSED. NEW YORK, September 20. In the final round of the United States national tennis singles championship, W. T. Tildcn defeated Wallace Johnson. o—l, (5—3, 6—l. In the first set Tilden played seriously. completely outclassing Johnson, who made only seven points in the first five games. Johnson then won the sixth game, when Tilden twice double-faulted. Tilden won the seventh game to love. The points were: Tilden 27, Johnson 13. Both players showed fast pace in the second set, but Johnson was powerless against his opponent's lightning service. Tilden lost three gomes by attempting spectacular drives, but won the eighth and ninth as though playing a practice match. The points were: Tilden 34, Johnson 25. In the third set Johnson was clearly beaten. He made frequent faults and smashed returns into the net. The points were: Tilden 28, Johnson IC—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
