Since 1911 the New Zealand Government has been in communication with the Government of the Union of South Africa regarding the exchange of Maori manuscripts in the Grey Collection in the South African Public Library at j Capetown relating to New Zealand, for South African manuscripts in the Grey Collection .in the Auckland Public Library. Last September the Prim© Minister of South Africa was asked by the New Zealand Government if he could see his way to introduce legislation, to enable the trustees of the South African 1 Public Library, Capetown, to enter into negotiations with the Auckland Public Library for the exchange. A reply has now been received by the Hon. Mr. Downie Stewart, Minister of Internal Affairs, from General J. C. Smuts, enclosing a copy of the Act passed by the Legislature empowering the trustees of the South Afriran Public Library to make the exchange. In forwarding the Act General Smuts states he is in entire agreement with the New Zealand Government that it is highly desirable the exchange should take place.
